Are you in Sacramento and using Surewest by any chance? We just got
their fiber TV service. I have their little Amino box hooked to the
Myth box and using an IR blaster. I'd be very interested to learn more
if you get your setup working right. If you are getting direct access
to their MPEG stream, I think the quality would be much better than
going through my PVR-150.

TV though IPTV multicasting. It is not Verizon it is a local city
sponsored company. I want to use the "CRC IP Network Recorder" to tune
in the IPTV signals directly off the network instead of having to use an
IR blaster to control the cable box etc.

I found some info that allowed me to set up the CRC IP Recorder tuner(s)
for the correct ip multicast address/port. And now if I tune my cable
box to a channel I can then watch that channel on mythtv. My cable box
and my mythtv box are not wired together. I am definitely decoding the
signal off the network. This is good, but I can't change channels and
the data for the program guide is not there.

The CRC IP recorder option in mythtv is setup so I have to define one
tuner for each channel. When I hit watch TV in mythtv it automatically
switches to the tuner with the highest priority. If my cable box is not
set to that channel then mythtv cant get the multicast stream and it
fails so I can only get one channel.

I don't understand how to set up the channel sources correctly. Each
tuner only has one channel but the line up has all the channels listed.

Has anybody gotten the CRC IP Recorder to work with IPTV service? I
think I am getting really close but I must be missing something to bring
it all together.

You should upgrade to SVN head or the mythtv-iptv branch.
The CRC IP recorder has been removed and replaced with an
extension of the Freebox recorder with some bits of the
CRC IP recorder merged in. It is now called the IPTV
recorder. This recorder lets you set up as many channels
as you need in a standard m3u file. You can then add the
XMLTV IDs as needed to get listings (if this offering
is available as a lineup in Zap2It, you should be able
to just run mythfilldatabase to get these after running
the channel scanner in mythtv-setup).

No I am in Burlington, Vermont. I have service from a city sponsored
company. It sounds like similar service to what you have. I also have an
amino STB. Though my IR blaster hasn't arrived yet. Could you send me your
IR blaster configuration? I've never used one before, but if you already
have the codes programed that should get me half way there.

In MythTV .21 there is suppose to be a more full featured IPTV tuner. It is
available in the SVN release now. Though I couldn't get it working after I
upgraded to SVN. I think my mythtv database got corrupted because
mythtv-setup kept hanging. I'll keep you up to date if I get it working.

a little off topic...
Are you able to record any channel or is there some level of DRM like
with the firewire enabled cableboxen?

I asked the provider if channels were encrypted. They said only premiums
like HBO, showtime, & skinamax would be. I have only experimented with a
couple of channels on mythtv. I haven't yet built a complete list of the
multicast addresses for all the channels. But I think I will be able to
directly record everything except the premium channels.

Of course your millage may vary. A different provider could encrypt
everything to force you into renting their STB. Like most cable providers
encrypt 99% of digital cable channels so that you can't use your own QAM
tuner to watch. Though I was able to get unencrypted pay-per-view
advertisements on mine.

So it looks like it will have the same problems generally as the
firewire output on cableboxen =(

Ryan, may I ask how you figured out the multicast addresses? I'd like
to see if I can get the same thing working with my Surewest fiber
service.

I used a packet sniffer called ettercap.
http://ettercap.sourceforge.net/
I had to plug the sniffing computer into the switch with my modem/router/STB
to see the packets. I could only get a single ip address from the modem
(used by the router). So the sniffing computer couldn't access the network
there. But it could still watch the traffic.

The multicast addresses should be in the form: udp://224.xxx.yyy.zzz:8208

This update is very interesting. Let me describe my current setup:
- mythtv compiled from mythtv-0.20.tar.bz2 (after the 'a' patch relase) on a
Mandriva 2007 machine.
- patched with crcipnetworkchannel from Mironov M.S.

then using Mironov's patch I'm able to setup all the channels I have using
their multicast address. The "tuner" will then work and act like any other
video source. It's great.
What will the new developements on the mythtv-iptv branch bring? Is there any
description somewhere? I'm wondering how painfull, or painless it will be for
me to update my setup to the new code.

However, I have one problem. Some of my multicast channels cannot be displayed
on live tv! I can record them like any other, and them watch the recording,
but when it comes to live tv, they just don't play. And I'm a bit at a loss
to know where to look for any error... help is welcomed.

I'd be very interested to learn more of your setup....specifically, what
is in your capturecards table and possibly any hiccups you ran into
during setup.

Right now, I have two problems:

1) I can view and save the stream using VLC or Xine, but I do not get
any sound. I copied the test file to a windows box and did get sound
when watching VLC. I have tried to compare the file with known good
files saved off my HD DVB card and cannot tell the difference -- both
have A/52 set as the audio codec and MPEGTS for video.

2) I have tried several variations of URLs in the Mythtv setup, and myth
tries to record something, but I always end up with an empty file.

Here is some info about my setup -- Gentoo on Mythtv ebuild 0.20_p11626.
I currently have the URL set as this:
udp://225.1.1.38:2001?multicast=1. I also tried without "multicast=1".
I don't seem to be getting any errors in the log. I have two network
interfaces on the box -- wlan0 connects to the internet and I took the
ethernet cable from the Amino STB, put it into a hub, then one line to
the STB and one to the myth box on eth0. I had to add some routes so
the multicast addresses would listen on eth0. When I do a tcpdump, I
get this:

The raw video quality is much better than what comes off my PVR-150
through an SVid cable, so I'm very excited about this (and freeing up a

Finally the weekend is here and I could spend some time with MythTV again!

I followed your advice and went to the latest SVN.
Just finished upgrading, and voilá, the error I had no longer occours!
Thanks for the tip!

Now I need to understand how to put back the grabber working, since I didn't
use it like instructed on the README.UDP.
And I also need to understand why mytharchive, mythmusic are not loading. BTW,
I got a compilation error on mythgallery. I had to disable it. I also need to
go over that.

The plugins are working fine now. I had to recompile them with the _new_
version of mythtv already installed.

I couldn't find how to restore the grabber functionality.
I defined xmltvid for the new IPTV channels as previously, but when I run
mythfilldatabase I get duplicate programs for this tuner and on the capture
card I have. Even though they have the same channum and callsign.
This causes the same show to be recorded twice, once for each source.

There's probably something new or that works differently on the IPTV tuner
than before. Can the grabber even be activated for this source?

One thing I learned from Mike Mironov is that I had to abandon my previous setup of .20 from the released tar ball with Mike's patch.
You need to go to the latest SVN. It works out of the box. Just follow the mythtv/libs/libmythtv/iptv/README.UDP.

So a mpg file saved with Xine on Linux from the multicast stream plays video and audio on a windows box, but the audio is not played on Linux? Is this what's going on?

So you start VLC and can play the video stream, then you stop VLC and start mythbackend on the same box and cannot get anything?
Let me know if you get the same results when you try with the latest SVN.
BTW, you need a webserver to put your m3u file. I couldn't serve it from the webserver I have on my mythtv box. I had to use another box. This box is online, email me if you need some help here.

I have not tried the SVN yet. WAF, was very, very low and is just
starting to bounce back. I don't want to cause any down-time, so I'm a
little hesitant at the moment. I do have an older machine that I am
thinking about temporarily using to test the SVN version though.

Yes, if I save it from VLC, it will play video and audio in VLC on
windows, but only video with VLC or Xine on Linux (gentoo). I did just
find out that it will play both audio and video with mplayer on the
mythtv box, but the audio is way off sync. I tried to post about this
extra info, but my emails do not seem to be making it through to the list.

Correct. I tried feeding the saved stream through mencoder (to dvd
specs, just for a test) and mythtv would then play both video and audio!
The audio was still out of sync.

Thanks. Web stuff is my day job, so that won't be a problem. However,
I'm still very reluctant to upgrade until I know I'll be able to play
the stream natively in myth without having to re-encode. There are lots
of times my wife wants to watch shows before a transcode job has had the
chance to run....(which incidentally has been a great annoyance to her
for high def channels, since xvmc is not working for me and our PCI
video card does not have the bandwidth to let the P4 do it's job. The HD
channels are coming OTA from an ATI HD Wonder).

I'll probably try the SVN on a test box.
