The Release Candidate is out, nice (I missed it too)! Congrats to all the dev's and thankyou again for all the hard work that goes into keeping these updates flowing.

All things being equal I will move as soon as I can as I am still interested in the IPTV stuff.

I've given it a go! I had a few dependency issues that I had to work
through before I could compile (I'm on Mint 18.2) but then everything
was fine. The schema update was no issue at all. One thing I could
not get compiled was bluray java menu support (--enable-bdjava) but
that was more of a curiosity than a need.

I liked the setup menus in 0.28 and previous MUCH better but
thankfully I don't need to be in them much.

Overall, great job!

Well, Christian Marillat kindly prepared packages for Debian, and
I tested it, but I still have some problems.

1. DB Upgrade failed
From the debian multimedia mailing list I know that besides me another
one had problems with the database upgrade with the same failure:

osgiliath mythbackend - - - mythbackend[18148]: C CoreContext dbcheck.cpp:437 (performActualUpdate) Upgrading to MythTV schema version 1347
osgiliath mythbackend - - - mythbackend[18148]: E CoreContext dbcheck.cpp:411 (performUpdateSeries) DB Error (Performing database upgrade): #012Query was: ??#037E#011 #012Error was: Driver error was [2/1064]:#012QMYSQL: Unable to
execute query#012Database error was:#012You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MariaDB server version for the right syntax to use near '??#037E' at line 1
osgiliath mythbackend - - - mythbackend[18148]: E CoreContext dbcheck.cpp:519 (UpgradeTVDatabaseSchema) Database schema upgrade failed.
osgiliath mythbackend - - - mythbackend[18148]: E CoreContext main_helpers.cpp:571 (run_backend) Couldn't upgrade database to new schema

In both cases there was some garbage in the SQL syntax.

We had to use the source code and extract the SQL commands from
libs/libmythtv/dbcheck.cpp to upgrade to 1347. Then the backend could
upgrade further to 1348.
Maybe it has something to do with the master.toUtf8() code.

And why are the SQL upgrades not available in separate files?

2. Frontend can’t play recorded shows anymore
While the backend is now running and recording fine I have problems the
frontend. I can’t play recorded shows anymore (I didn’t check life tv).
If I start playing nothing happens anymore.
The other parts of the GUI are working fine.
Maybe this has something to do with the new IPv6 features? Maybe I should
try to turn IPV6 off?

Does anyone has the same problems?

Shade and sweet water!

Stephan

I didn't think I'd hit this one, since I saw no apparent misbehaviour,
but checking my logs I have indeed seen this.

I'm getting this sometimes, but I've not discerned a pattern yet.

When it hangs there are some log messages about VDPAU as the last
things in mythfrontend log. Which is odd because I'm using VAAPI with
i965 GFX. After restarting mythfrontend a few times it has started
working again. So far I've only seen this with DVB-T2 HD recordings,
not with any SD recordings.

I think what might be happening is that sometimes VAAPI is failing to
initialise and it is falling through to VDPAU which isn't expected to
work. When it fails I see:

I picked up some xorg and driver updates in the same "apt upgrade" run,
but it was just a packaging revision bump and I've tried downgrading
all the relevant looking packages to what they were before and the
problem persisted.

I don't have IPv6, so _if_ we are seeing the same problems it seems
unlikely the IPv6 isn't involved.

For anyone waiting for the 1.0 release of MythTV, you just missed your
chance. Nothing quite like advancing 28.7 versions in a single stride!

Does this mean that MythTV is finally stable? :)

Interesting. After all the backend refuses to start if the DB upgrade
fails.

Well, I’m not sure xorg or some driver changed here.

Yes, but the old frontend had VDPAU errors as well. I have a notebook
with a Core i7 and integrated Intel.
Do you have to change some video configuration in the frontend?

My backend is starting. I have DBSchemaVer = 1348 now, from the logs it
looks like I restarted the backend (I don't remember) and it seemed to
have continued with the upgrade:

My logs from the 0.28 era seem to have reotated away (already, I need
to look into that since it's only been a few days).

Mines a Core 2 Duo CPU E8200 with an integrated i915.

I haven't made a change to the video configuration. I did at one point
go into the video settings and reselect the VAAPI option and switch
to/from the VPDAU settings before putting it back to the original VAAPI
setting.

The failure is intermittent and I've not had a chance to investigate
fully yet, so I don't have a solution.

Ian.

Ah, thank you. I switched to VAAPI in the video section. Now everything
works again.

According to

www.mythtv.org

V29 has been released
Phoronix announced the release but this time round it doesn't seem overly
well communicated. I missed the RC announcements as well.

Yes. This is the release candidate. But that means release is probably getting close. Month or two maybe?

I have pulled updates for 29 and dropped in my 0.28 database. All seems to work fine. There may have been a crash in the dB upgrade but I was half asleep and just restarted and it worked second time. I work through it in more detail later.
Re: Mythtv 29 (aka 0.29) released [ In reply to ]
just for a heads up I'm running .29 on antergos and they only problem i
have encountered was i had to create a pin in the backend for the frontend
to connect. did not have to do this with 28.1.
this is a system with front an back on it.

I just updated mythbuntu's launchpad to v29 today and updated to
version (v29-pre-520-g7a1ab50). No issues with the upgrade process but
the frontend had a similar connection issue. I had to check 'Listen on
all IP addresses' before the frontend would connect to the backend (I
already had 0000 pin). Frontend is .11 and backend is .10 on the same
subnet and same switch so I'm guessing this is a bug with this new
security feature in this pre-release.

Recordings and videos (existing and new) work as well as they did on
v0.28 so far.

It looks like that version is from 14 July, which is what is showing here:
https://launchpad.net/~mythbuntu/+archive/ubuntu/0.29

I wonder why it hasn't been updated since. Perhaps the change from 0.29 to 29.0 broke something.

I want to upgrade, but would rather have at least the release version and confirmation that fixes will be coming to.
