Open Source Linux driver for Hauppauge HD PVR 2 (1080p over HDMI) released!
Hi,

Hauppauge has released an open source Linux driver for its HD PVR 2 model 1512, capable of capturing a 1080p video stream over HDMI.

ftp://ftp.hauppauge.com/Support/Test/Lin/hauppauge_driver_src_ver5.tgz

This is the only personal video recorder on the market that can capture full HD video at 30 fps (1080p30) over HDMI and that has an open source Linux driver.

It would be great to have this driver merged upstream so that it works with Linux out of the box. Could anyone ask the kernel developers on the linux-media list (http://www.linuxtv.org/lists.php) if they would be interested in porting it?

Thanks,
Bill

The "over HDMI" part is mostly useless for MythTV's purposes. You
can't use that with an STB, since the HDPVR2 doesn't support
encryption and nearly all cable STB's HDMI outputs are encrypted.

Why a driver for the PVR2 will be important is when the availability
of working 1212 units starts to decline as they age and they get
harder to find on eBay.

Also, for reference, while it can technically capture a 1080p stream,
it can only do so at up to 30Hz. When fed a 1080p 60Hz signal, it
drops every other frame.

This appears to be a userspace driver that uses libusb. I doubt whether it
makes any sense to create a kernel module from it, although someone could
certainly refactor and maintain it as a project.

I believe one of us is confused, since last I was aware
Hauppauge was still selling (as new) the 1212 units.

And while I can conjecture, do you know something
I do not, or is this just FUD?

They're getting harder and harder to find via the typical retail
channels (i.e. Newegg, Amazon, etc).

> And while I can conjecture, do you know something
> I do not, or is this just FUD?

I would assume he's suggesting that the 1212 is a pretty old design,
has had pretty poor reliability from the start, and the HDPVR2 is
generally a newer/better/more robust hardware design which is readily
available just about anywhere. That said, my suggestion as to what
he's thinking is entirely conjecture. :-)

All that said though, is there any indication that this is actually an
open source release, as opposed to unintentionally leaked source code?
Not that I want to be the naysayer here, but if you actually look at
the contents of the tarball, it's riddled with copyrighted code and
code explicitly marked as proprietary/confidential. Also note that
there is absolutely no sign of anything explicitly released under an
actual open source license (GPL, BSD, or otherwise), aside from the
fact that it's got a copy of libusb bundled with it (which is LGPL).

I know it's up on Hauppauge's public FTP server, but that's not really
any indication this is an authorized release. That said, the OP might
have some additional info that he didn't mention in the original email
as to how he was directed to it (and under what terms it was
provided).

True, but still available direct from manufacturer. It
is not usual for retailers to stop carrying a product
once everyone sees a newer one (with a +1 version
number on it) and only purchases the new one.
Who still would buy a 2008 Elite Kuro Pro when next
years models came out (Ok, bad example, many
would still buy one).

I agree with everything you say. It is also possible
Hauppauge has ended new production, and only
"old stock" is available, but that was not said (by
Hauppauge, or Eric), so that is why I asked.

> All that said though, is there any indication that this is actually an

I noticed that too, which means I am now likely "tainted"
and might need a mind wipe (and Nimoy is no longer
available) to do future work on a driver (if I even wanted
to do so) since I could not show previous independent
work.

Fortunately there are rumors of previously developed
commercially available (and licensed) drivers (not just
for the HD-PVR2, but many of the newer products),
for which the developers can show prior art and work
product as a base for any future efforts. I am sure
Hauppauge could provide a pointer to the OP (or
anyone else) if they have the $$$$$ to spend for a
commercial driver (and can agree to the terms).
And yes, I suspect (without any knowledge) that
if the OP has to ask what the cost is, and what
the license terms are, they will not be able to come
to a satisfactory arrangement.

Perfectly accurate conjecture.

I have no insider knowledge of any of the internal workings of the
Hauppauge corporation. I'm just a customer and former fellow Long
Island resident.

Although even if Hauppauge were to sell its last 1212 today, I suspect
they'd be on eBay for quite some time to come. After all, there are
currently 73 running auctions for my first "pc", the Timex Sinclair
1000. Given how us crazy Linux people represent a minority of the
market, there probably won't be true scarcity for some time to come,
even if we all tried to buy a few.

So has any HD PVR 2 owner tried this yet? I don't own one but curious to
know if it works.

It compiled OK here once I made the rebuild.sh executable and
HDPVR2-testApp -h works but that is as far as I can go.

Interesting, it seems to support Mac OS X as well (at least 10.8+).

I couldn't find anything from Hauppauge about the status of this app
and their plans for it. Links, anyone?

Even as it stands now, HDPVR2-testApp could conceivably be made to
work with Myth via the Import Recorder:

http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Import_recorder

One would have to develop scripts to start/stop recordings, etc.

Well I got myself a HD PVR 2 Gaming Edition and can confirm the driver
works.

It's clearly a leak of the alpha driver since some things are clearly
not finished or tested and the debugging is very verbose. It's easy to
get it to segfault since many error conditions aren't checked - for
example passing a filename of a file that isn't writeable will segfault
the test app.

A couple of things that had me puzzled you need vim installed to get it
to compile since the build uses the xxd utility which on my Gentoo
system is provided by app-editors/vim-core. Second it seems to capture
from the HDMI port you need both the input and output HDMI connectors on
the HD PVR2 connected to something otherwise the test app fails with a
No input connected error. Even with it connected the pass through
doesn't seem to work but the capture does work.

I will happily add the necessary bits to Myth to get this working, but it
sounds like I should wait a while before splurging on a HD PVR2. I did
email Hauppauge support asking about the driver, and they simply responded
that it is still in "beta", with no offer to supply me with an "official"
copy.

My HD PVR1 units have worked well, but I do get a couple of recording
failures each month. It would be nice if the HD PVR2 works well.

Out of curiosity John, how many recordings work for you vs fail? Just
curious, I'm running 2x HDPVR(1) with Bell ExpressVu and have almost
zero failures. I also get a few channels via HD-Homerun (OTA) and
occasionally have signal issues with those recordings, but,
knock-on-wood, the HD-PVR's have been doing fine? Of course I also
refuse to update (the OS, currently running master for Myth) the slave
backend that the HDPVR's are on, just in case it breaks something.

Hi Andrew.

Pretty much every one of the failures is the result of the STB doing
something unexpected. The HD-PVR(1) does not recover from the unexpected
well at all. If you tell it to "start encoding" while the STB is still
trying to get its act together, you will not end up with a good recording.
I am hoping the HD-PVR(2) handles such situations better.

For reference, I am using Directv H20 STBs. They are pretty old at this
point, but they have optical S/PDIF and I have never had any problem with
audio/video sync with Dolby Digital.

It looks like this driver is no longer there, and I didn't find it
elsewhere on their FTP site. I was hoping this meant that they had a
release version of it, but I suspect they simply got annoyed with customer
questions and removed it. I'm hopeful they get something out soon for it,
as I really want to ditch cable for fiber but don't want to buy the older
HD PVR models at a premium.

An HDMI splitter will negotiate the initial encryption and pass the stream
to its outputs unencrypted. I believe this is how gamers capture recordings
from their Xbox and PS4 consoles.

Are you actually *sure* about that? Or just repeating something which
you have read.
Because my understanding of HDCP (over HDMI or otherwise) is that HDCP
compliance is required in order for an encrypted stream to be passed
through.

Otherwise, of course, owning an HDCP splitter would be a felony breach
of the DMCA anti-circumvention sections, in the USA, and importing or
selling one would be breach of Section 41.1 of the Copyright Act in Canada.

Section 29.22 of the Copyright Act Canada, provides that 'it is not an
infringement of copyright' to make a private copy from a authorized copy
for private use.

But like the US, a Canadian is subject to civil action for circumventing
a technological protection measure. Presumably, owning an HDMI splitter
which did not comply with HDCP passthrough, in Canada, is not illegal.
But you have to deal with criminals to buy one! And it would be a civil
breach of copyright rights to use one.

(The dilemma involved in parsing the right provided in section 29.22
against section 41.1 is .... left to the student for independent study).

Note that in discussing this HDMI is an electrical/physical standard
for the plugs/sockets and the data stream, while HDCP is an added
protocol where the transmitter and receiver confirm the right of the
receiver to receive the encrypted stream *and will comply with required
encryption standards*. An unencrypted stream can be transmitted over
any HDMI link, but HDCP requires the receiver to be HDCP compliant. Not
that HDCP cannot be broken.... it was broken 15 years ago!

I'm not. I'm basing it on what I had read online while shopping for
splitters. My home FE is split to four TVs throughout my house but I've
never run an HDCP source through it. I assume that ChromeCast and FireTV
sticks use HDCP? I could plug one into it tomorrow and report back.
Alternatively I could plug my Xbox One into it but I'd have to lug the
thing downstairs.

Well you have to be comparing apples with apples.
If you are feeding your 4 FE's from a myth BE, then there is no HDCP in
the stream. -> no problem,

If you are plugging some form of network receiver (Chromecast or FireTV
stick) into a post-circa-2005 TV, then any HDCP in the stream will be
confirmed/handshaked with the TV, as *they* are HDCP compliant.
You would have to plug the stick into something NOT HDCP compliant, to
determine that status, (check against a compliant box) then feed it
through the hub to the non-compliant tv.

I think you will find that the net has been cast rather tightly and that
HDMI splitters available in North America are all HDCP compliant on both
sides of the box..

I have NO idea about the compliance characteristics of an XBOX One, but
if it is not compliant it will be a useful state-tester.

Throughout I am assuming 1080 HDMI to HDMI connections, not Component
nor downgraded 480p SD outputs.

Looking at an example splitter
<http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003UYOEMI>, it appears that at least
at some point this one stripped out HDCP. However, they've apparently
changed to a model that does not:

No one would be so stupid to claim that there is no illegal
(depending on jurisdiction) activity taking place, nor that it
has not in the past ("I am shocked — shocked— to find that
gambling is going on in here!"). And while it is unlikely that
individuals will be prosecuted for participating (i.e. jaywalking
usually is a crime, yet it is rarely prosecuted), only a fool
(or someone with deep pockets and a lot of good lawyers)
would publicly pronounce "Hey, look over here, I am violating
the laws of my land, and you should too!", as that tends to
attract attention of the unwanted kind.

All current reputable re-sellers have purged their stock of
any device that knowingly does not implement HDCP
compliance. Some P-2-P sites seem to not look too
closely as long as their sales cut makes it to the quarterly
bottom line, but that too is changing over time.

Regardless, discussing technologies that violate the laws
of the US is prohibited on *this* list, per item #5 of the
faq section "Anything else I should be aware of?" from
https://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Mailing_List_etiquette.

At release, HDCP was required on the "next gen" game
boxes to record. But as I understand it, all recent firmware
releases on game boxes relaxed the HDCP requirements
(sometimes with a magic "disable HDCP" config setting) in
order to allow recording of game play (while still requiring
HDCP compliance when playing back other content that
specifies DRM protections; so your PSx can play games
without HDCP, but not play back a Blu Ray disc without
HDCP).

There are three kinds of HDMI splitters wrt HDCP.

1. Those that strip HDCP protection.
2. Those that are HDCP compliant on both sides.
3. Those that detect HDCP on the input and, when encrypted, don't pass
anything through (or pass audio but not video).

Those in class 1 are hard to find. A few of the very early models did
that, but you won't find that on anything current.

I have two HDMI splitters. One is type 2, and one is type 3.

The unit is HDMI v1.3 compliant. Of course it does not strip. If you drill
into the questions and answers, a buyer reports NOT.

Anyone know of a newer release?

It looks like this driver is no longer there, and I didn't find it elsewhere on their FTP site.  I was hoping this meant that they had a release version of it, but I suspect they simply got annoyed with customer questions and removed it. I'm hopeful they get something out soon for it, as I really want to ditch cable for fiber but don't want to buy the older HD PVR models at a premium.

Not sure if this was the moset recent thread discussing the HD PVR 2, but  as Hauppauge has released a new driver I was wondering if anyone has played with it?
