UPnP, ripped DVD's, and the PS3
Hello,

I have set up MythTV 0.23-fixes with UPnP enabled and am watching
recordings using a PS3 as a UPnP client. I was wondering if I can use
MythTV/UPnP to stream ripped DVD's as well? I've been searching the
archives and cannot find a clear answer if this is possible. Thank
you.

MythTV's UPnP server does not perform transcoding, so the content must
be in a format the PS3 can understand.

http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/3_15/video/filetypes.html

Unaltered rips should be MPEG2 in a transport stream with AC3, and thus
should be directly playable. If you want to transcode, it must be to
H.264 and AAC, and must be in an MP4 container, or a transport stream.
Additionally, the PS3 has undocumented restrictions on compression
options used with H264, but most encoder programs will have a profile
for the PS3 or similar devices.

I find transport streams have the best chance of working, PS3 is very fussy but gives great playback results.

All of my DVD rips are unaltered. How do I tell MythTV where they are
located so they can served to the PS3?

Thank you for the help.

The UPnP server was designed to work with the old pre-StorageGroup
MythVideo. You have to set up MythVideo on your backend using the old
local file approach.

I'll give it a try, thanks!

It better, for over 200 watts consumed at idle, and closer to 300 playing back. Might be cheaper to buy the DVDs than to
pay the power bill :-)

There. Fixed that for you.

Hmmm. My Kill-a-Watt indicated 205 watts at idle, and 245-255 playing back an HD file. I was playing back under Linux,
using mplayer from the command line, playing an NFS-mounted file, not the Sony UPnP client, I'm not sure what if any
difference that would make.

This is an older unit, purchased soon after Terra-Soft announced Linux was available for the PS3, in fact, I purchased the
unit from TS with Linux pre-installed.

Newer units may well pull less power, I'm sure the "slim" unit does. Running the Sony OS instead of Linux might make a
difference, not sure about that. The installed hard drive might make a slight difference, but I'd think that would only be a
watt or two.

But in any case it's a lot of power to just play back a file.

This article was about three months after release, so probably running
the release unit.
http://www.hardcoreware.net/reviews/review-356-3.htm
The official rated consumption on the release units was 'around 180
watts'. The slims are now around one third that.

Not to belabor this thread, but now that I think about it, since Linux on the PS3 has no access to the accelerated video
my measurement was with pure software decoding, almost certainly consuming more power than the Sony software, which
presumably can take advantage of the video hardware.

I read somewhere that Sony was accepting units with one subsidiary core bad, I know all of mine were working.

60 watts is certainly more reasonable than 180+.

Guess I'll see what my Revo is drawing, it certainly produces pictures that are as good as a PS3, at least to my eyes.

I use an Xbox-360 as a UPnP client at times, I don't know what it pulls, but I can feel the heat from it as I walk past
it.
