Any way to set default tuner/source?
Hi All,

Question: Is there a way to set a default tuner/source for the Watch TV
option in MythTV?

I've just installed a new DVB-S card which is working great. In doing so I
also took the opportunity to setup the RadioTimes feeds and everything is
working great, even BBC HD :-)

In doing this, I created two sources using the uk_rt xmltv grabber; and
bound my DVB-T and DVB-S cards accordingly. Unfortunately, my DVB-S source
and tuner card now seem to have become the default when I go to watch Live
TV. I've matched up all the xmltv ID's in mythweb so I only have one
instance of each channel across DVB-T and DVB-S, but Freesat is missing some
channels, hence when you change channels outside of the guide it can't
receive them as its still locked onto the DVB-S source.

I'd therefore like to make my DVB-T (Freeview) source/tuner the default
source/tuner - except I can't seem to find anything to do this? Any
thoughts?

Thanks!
Steve

Delete your Input Connections in mythtv-setup (not your capture cards
or videosources), and then recreate them, configuring the input you
want to be used first for LiveTV last. So, if you want the DVB-S input
to be used last for LiveTV, configure that input first, and then add
your DVB-T tuner afterwards.

Don't forget you may also want to look into using udev to ensure your
DVB devices are consistently numbered across reboots, if you haven't
already looked into this.

Ah, I thought it would be the other way round :-) Hence I created my
Freeview bindings first. I'll give this a go and report back to the list
for the archives :-)

Well that was quick. There's no option to delete input connections so how
do you delete them. The delete key doesn't seem to do anything and I can't
see a way within an input connection to remove them?

if you like to live dangerously you can edit the mysql database
and remove the input connection you want to be last and then
re-add it via the normal mythtv-setup program...
mysqlnavigator is most your friend to browse the database.

You have to delete your capture cards, not input connections. Delete
All Cards if you want them to be added as 1, 2, 3...
Of course, you could also just bump the priority of them to put them
in the order you want. I'm not sure why everyone always says to delete
and recreate them instead of just changing priority. Changing priority
always works for me.

My bad - choose the 'Delete all capture cards' option in the capture
cards screen, then re-add them, adding the card intended for LiveTV
last. Then re-configure the inputs in Input Connections.

In Input Connections, you can set the video source to 'None' but
without loking at the code I'm not sure if that will do what you want
it to. The 'Delete all capture cards' option will.

Thanks for all the pointers. I'll try the input priority route first as
I've spent quite some time tuning and tweaking channels and don't want to
loose that if I don't have to. If that doesn't work I'll go down this
deletion route and see how it comes out.

Thanks again everyone..

Cheers,
Steve.

You won't lose channel information. That is in Video Sources, not
capture cards or input connections which you will be setting up again.
Try the "changing the priority" route first so you don't have to
delete anything. :)

Right, well input priorities didn't work for Live TV. I tired setting the
DVB-S card as 0 (no difference) and 4 (no difference) with DVB-T tuners at
prioirty 2 & 3 and it didn't make any difference - though I suspect it might
on Recordings.

So looks like its time to get going on the delete keys. I'm much happier
setting it all up now I've got my head round the uk_rt grabber which I now
understand :-)

Cheers,
Steve

I've changed card priorities several times also.
In my experience changing the card priority changes the way the
scheduler behaves. If you set one card with priority 1 and all others at
zero, the scheduler will always try and record on the card with higher
priority. So if there is a later showing or something like that on an
input connected to the higher priority card, it will get recorded later
rather than sooner. If all cards are set to priority zero it will just
use the cards in the order you entered them in.

Other than that I haven't noticed any differences, and this is useful in
fact for say having only one digital tuner that you want things to try
and record on always first, and record analog only if it doesn't show up
on the digital input.

Of course, other ways to do that are also select the preferred input in
the recording rules, which you can't do for liveTV of course. Lots of
freedom to do things different ways though.

It is by default. If, however, you enable the setting:

Avoid conflicts between live TV and scheduled shows
If enabled, live TV will choose a tuner card that is less likely to have
scheduled recordings rather than the best card available.

(which most people enable), it works as Nick describes (though things
get a bit more complex when you have multiple backends, one of which is
on the same host as the frontend that's watching LiveTV).
