RSS News Reader application only shows a few articles
I'm just looking for a sanity check here.

I've raised bug #953 (https://maemo.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=953) which questions why the N800 RSS news reader application only displays the most recent one or two articles from each feed, even though each feed may have 40+ articles available.

According to the RSS "specification" (comment #2 - is this specification available online?) this behaviour is correct, which in my mind leaves the news reader application fundamentally broken. When using regular updates, the application will only ever display a handful of the latest articles, deleting any previous articles you may not have read, which is useless!! :)

I'd appreciate any feedback here (or in the bug - even a vote) to confirm if you believe the current behaviour is correct (in which case it's just myself and Jakub that have issues!) or if you agree with myself and Jakub - the news reader is broken.

Many thanks
Neil

Agreed, the behaviour is fundamentally broken for the most common use
case. The only way it'd make sense is if the user was expected to read
all the most recent articles before it refreshed. Barmy.

Anyway, I tried to vote for this bug, but it seems the N800 only has 1
vote allocation: vs. 1000 for the 770! Perhaps this balance could be
redressed somewhat?!

Cheers,

Andrew

Subscribed to the BBC's News feed I see more than that - somewhere in the region of 30+ articles.

It seems to do that - some from this morning have scrolled but there are no stats to allow me to tell how many are cached.

It seems to me that if you open a feed that all of the items are marked as
"read" unless you tick the save for later, even if you don't scroll the
whole thing. On the next refresh, all "read" items are not displayed. Very
annoying design choice.

Andy - are you using auto-refresh, and if so what interval do you have set?

It seems that the application is removing "old" articles with each refresh, so if you have a very slow refresh (eg. 4 or 8 hours) it's possible the feed reader may show 30+ articles, but if the refresh interval is rapid (eg. 30 minutes) then it will only display a couple of articles - the other 28+ will be deleted!

I'm not using autorefresh because I'm in rarely connected mode.

Yup, you're right. I just refreshed and the article count is now down to 3.

You could always try out "rawdog". Needs python installed.

lately I've actually been finding that the story I see in the applet
is not even in the application when I click to read more. ;(

Agreed. At the minimum there should be an option for how many
articles to keep in view at any time. Set it for 20 and next time it
refreshes if there are 3 new articles it will show them + 17 old
articles. Currently it's a joke if your refresh interval is very
often, especially if there are few articles being posted.

Software is not perfect. Feeds are xml, so it is possible to fetch it
from script, make xslt file and process to html page. Or take gui app,
what makes majority of users comfortable.
I used "snownews" on my i386 box. Depends on ncurses. Now, rawdog is
all I need.

I use ReaderMini for my main feeds...

The built in I use as my up to date newspaper scan through the day...
