[GIT PULL] SCSI queuecommand API change for 2.6.37-rc1
This patch set contains a single patch modifying the SCSI queuecommand
host template API to go from being called with the host lock held to
being called locklessly. The transformation is a directly equivalent
one (i.e. the locking is simply pushed into each HBA) but will form the
basis for optimising locking in the driver patch for the next merge
window.

The patch is available here:

master.kernel.org:/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/jejb/scsi-rc-fixes-2.6.git

The short changelog is:

Jeff Garzik (1):
host lock push-down

The full diff is below. It's been in linux-next for two days now, and
has survived on every boot system I've tried, plus I used a script to
search for all SCSI drivers and verify they got updated (which they
did).

Ok, so we talked about this patch at the KS, but I never saw it.

And now seeing it, I do detest it.

Why? Because if some driver gets missed for any reason (notably if
it's currently out of tree, and gets merged later), afaik there will
be ABSOLUTELY ZERO compiler warnings or anything about it, because you
kept the "queuecommand" function exactly the same. Whether it's a
locked or non-locked one, it always is of type

int func(struct scsi_cmnd *cmd, void (*done)(struct scsi_cmnd *));

so there is no inherent type safety. Nothing will ever notice. Not the
compiler, and probably not the user either, since a missed lock with
probably work in many cases.

So it's a flag-day change, but it's a flag-day change which makes it
_really_ easy to miss the fact that a big change had actually
happened.

And the sad thing is that this could _trivially_ have been fixed while
actually making the patch no bigger. Make the new function look like

int func(struct Scsi_Host *shost, struct scsi_cmnd *cmd, void
(*done)(struct scsi_cmnd *));

instead, and that would have made the "DEF_SCSI_QCMD()" macro simpler
and cleaner, it would likely make the code better (since the caller
really already always has the 'shost' right there, so looking it up
agan in cmd->device->shost is just extra work), _and_ it would mean
that if some driver didn't get converted, the compiler would
automatically have noticed.

And the patch would look 100% the same, except for these three small
one-liner changes:
- the additional one-liner change to the 'queuecommand' function
pointer description itself
- the one-liner change to the actual call-site (which would now not
just drop the lock, it would pass in the extra argument)
- DEF_SCSI_QCMD() would drop the "struct Scsi_Host *shost = .." line,
and instead just take the new argument

It wouldn't change the patch wrt any of the low-level drivers at all.
But it would add so much inherent safety against mistakes.

It would _also_ make it much clearer when each driver is then starting
to remove that use of the wrapper function. When you remove the
wrapper function, you'd probably remove the "_lck" thing at the end of
the name, but you'd also change the prototype. It would be a very
clear visual clue whether this was a properly converted driver, or
whether this was a driver that had never seen the whole locking change
at all.

So please: when you change the semantics of a function, just change
the function prototype (or function name) at the same time. Especially
when it comes to a driver interface, so that the drivers don't get
taken by surprise.

Type safety and automatic compiler warnings really are our friends.
Especially when the patch was presumably mostly auto-generated, and
maybe the script missed something, and missing some conversion has
such subtle effects.

That is precisely what I mentioned in the original patch:
http://marc.info/?l=linux-ide&m=128891665713984&w=2

And brought this up again when James merged my patch:
http://marc.info/?l=linux-scsi&m=128943169802009&w=2

I even volunteer[ed] to do the work to make it happen...

Jeff

P.S. My patch was not auto-generated. One of the two previous attempts
at this change was scripted w/ coccinelle, and it created obvious
locking problems.

For the record, I prefer a rename to a prototype change.

I'm certainly ok with a rename in most cases, but in this case I think
the prototype change might be better:

- adding something like a "lck" prefix (or postfix) to the function
pointer name is the logical thing to do, but it's only logical right
_now_. Once it all becomes historic and the normal way to do things,
rather than a flag-day issue, any name change is likely to just be
annoying.

So then we' either have to plan to rename it back once all the
flag-day issues are over and everybody is convinced that things have
been converted both in and out of tree, or we'd have to live with an
odd "lock" thing. We've seen this issue before: now we've finally
gotten rid of the BKL, and what do we call our "ioctl()" function? We
call it "unlocked_ioctl". It still makes sense today because the BKL
is in fresh memory, but I already wince when I look at it.

- it would add another line of change to each driver, just for the
name change. Maybe not a big deal, and maybe it means you could avoid
renaming the existing function instead (and add the "lck" postfix to
the new _wrapper_ function, since you need to change the line that
initializes things anyway)

- in this case, I think the prototype would probably be improved by
passing in the Scsi_Host pointer. Both the caller and the callee _do_
need it, after all. So yes, it's an "artificial" change, but it's one
that doesn't make the code look worse.

But really, I don't care deeply. I think changing the name of the
"queuecommand" function in scsi_host_template (or whatever) is fine
too, and will certainly fix the "silently and happily compile even
non-converted code" problem too. That _is_ the more common way of
handling this, but as mentioned above, we've had issues with that
approach too. So whatever...

Actually, it'd be even better if we took away an argument.

int queuecommand(struct scsi_cmnd *cmd);

Every single driver sets cmd->scsi_done = done;

(some don't do it immediately, but they all do it eventually. Do it in
the single caller, and eventually remove the assignments from the drivers).

.. and i that's all they really ever do with it, I guess that that
would indeed be an improvement.

I still do think that passing in shost is actually a good idea, since
you'll normally be needing it for locking and other things anyway
(looking at the libata-scsi.c one, for example, the very first thing
it wants to do is to look up the port from the shost pointer).

Having to inevitably do that silly double dereference
("cmd->device->host") seems bogus. Passing in the host you want to
queue something on seems to be natural, and avoids that nasty chain of
dereferences, so it really should improve the code.

I don't think there are any drivers that don't want that host pointer
pretty much immediately, even if they can elide the locking. But I
admit I only looked at two (qla4xxx driver does the exact same thing:
the very first thing in the queuecommand function is
"to_qla_host(cmd->device->host)", but it wants that hostdata thing
too, so whatever.)

So the shost pointer is certainly a lot more useful than the 'done'
function pointer. So yeah, I'd switch them around - pass the 'done'
thing indirectly, and the shost directly.

As noted in the patch v4, just sent, I agree.

You bozos would come up with this the _minute_ I sent my patch, eh? :)

IMO, the 'done' removal should be in a separate patch from the host lock
push-down.

It should be straightforward, if applied immediately following the
push-down patch. bisect remains clean.

I'd like to get rid of done too. I'm ambivalent on whether we pass in
the host or not, but I did it anyway.

The patch is reasonably small but there are a few driver prototypes to
clean up as well. How does the attached look? If OK, I'll fold it in
and resubmit the pull.

I think I picked up all the non-x86 drivers that don't show up under
allmodconfig, but it would be nice to incubate this in next for another
couple of days to be sure.

Looks like you caught the megaraid deadlock, but missed a few others...
I'll rediff mine as incremental as discussed on IRC.

Great, thanks for jumping on this everyone..

I will await Jeff's v5 pull request to linus and rebase the atomic_t
host->cmd_serial_number counter + first round of host_lock-less LLDs
conversions patches on this code for the lock_less-LLDs-for-38-v2.

It is basically your incremental patch + fas216 deadlock fix + several
more prototype fixes.

oh and removed some dead code from atari_scsi that became
dead-and-incorrect code.
