Can not find ivtvfbctl & no video output from my hauppauge 350 card
Hi -

I am hoping someone can help. I am setting up MythTV on FC6 -
2.6.22.9-61.fc6. I have been following the instructions on
http://wilsonet.com/mythtv/fcmyth.php?SID&expandables=closed&ivtv=open&pvr350out=open#capture.
All has been going well - have mythtv settup and X working. I can capture
video ... and play it back with mplayer. However I can not play it from
MythTV - just get an error stating "Unable to initialize video". When I
tail the myth tv logs I see the following:

2007-10-14 21:40:38.142 adding: delldvr as a client (events: 0)
2007-10-14 21:40:38.147 TVRec(1): Changing from None to WatchingLiveTV
2007-10-14 21:40:38.149 TVRec(1): HW Tuner: 1->1
2007-10-14 21:40:41.354 TVRec(1): Changing from WatchingLiveTV to None
2007-10-14 21:40:41.530 Finished recording Government Access: channel 1004
2007-10-14 21:40:41.546 MythSocket(a21fce8:-1): writeStringList: Error,
socket went unconnected.

Additionally - I can not find the ivtvfbctl utiliity ... I am wondering if
this may be related? When I search through the /var/logs/messages and grep
for ivtv, it looks like I am running ivtv version 1.0.0:

How are you using the pvr-350's tv-out, via the special option in the
mythtv-setup or plain over X? If you have enable the special tv-out
support try disabling it.

Nope, you should find them in the ivtv-1.0.3-<version>.rpm in the ATrpms repo.

Don't use grep but:
dmesg | tac |
sed -n '/=\ \ END INIT IVTV\ \ =/,/= START INIT IVTV =/p;
/= START INIT IVTV =/q' |
tac

Also have a look at the troubleshooting page [1] and if there are any
error messages in you Xorg.log or kernel log.

Re: Can not find ivtvfbctl & no video output from my hauppauge 350 card [ In reply to ]
Thanks Sander!

I disabled mythTV's tv-out support, and now I do have video .... but NO
audio. Interesting, one step closer, however I would really like to
understand what the issue is with MythTV tv-out option then.

Any thoughts on how to get audio?

I did set mythtv back to enabling tv-out and tailed the logs
(/var/log/messages and /var/log/Xorg.0.log) ... but no error/warning
messages.

I did take a look at the troubleshooting page ... nothing there really
aligns with the problems I am seeing - I do already have the compat option
set.

Thanks again,

Ann

Since you're using ivtv 1.0, you'll have to use a recent build of MythTV
trunk. If you want something more stable & are prepared to compile it
yourself, you could use MythTV release-0-20-fixes with the following patch.

http://www.iarmst.demon.co.uk/test/mythfix-ivtv-v3.patch

This is the most recent backport of the update needed for ivtv 1.0 support.

Be advised, there is a bug with the ivtv driver currently supplied with kernel
2.6.22, which can cause the mpeg decoder to become disabled. This is fixed in
2.6.23.

I just had this, I had to move my audio from the
PVR-350 audio out to my soundcard. I just bought a
cable last night to do this and it is working fine.

Re: Can not find ivtvfbctl & no video output from my hauppauge 350 card [ In reply to ]
Thanks Ian!

I was able to grab your patch file and apply it against the
release-0-20-fixes branch of code checkedout from SVN, and compile it.

Now, I have a question I was hoping you or someone could help with. I was
hoping to apply the new compiled code over my original mythtv installation
(installed via rpm). I did "make install" - but noticed that it seems to
be placing things in a different location than the rpm installer. I am not
a linux or mythtv wiz ... so I was hoping for some pointers on what files to
move where in order for the new compiled binaries to be picked up.

Thanks again,

Ann

PS - I was wanting to keep my original install as I installed myth suite and
I have only downloaded and compiled mythtv

Actually, I was able to manually start up what I think is the new version
installed ... and the problem is still there - can not get any tv-out. Ian,
is there some way for me to verify I am running with your patches?

Thanks,

Ann

I assume by 'different location' you mean a different directory. I think
you'll have to do a 'make uninstall' for MythTV to remove the new install.
Then rerun ./configure with the --prefix option to specify where it should
go. I think it defaults to /usr/local, so to place it under /usr you would
run './configure --prefix=/usr'

I'm pretty much in the same situation as the original poster. I have X

I'm using Ubuntu with kernel 2.6.22-14. I actually had everything
working on feisty, but the playback broke when I upgraded to gutsy.

I believe I have ivtv-fb loaded. It's listed in /etc/modules and I have
"options ivtv-fb osd_compat=1" in /etc/modprobe.d/aliases. And ivtv_fb
shows up when I do lsmod.

Here's my IVTV dmesg output:

I'm not sure how to fix those 2 X errors. Do I need to load "glx" in my
xorg.conf?

And to superm1_ from #ubuntu-mythtv on IRC, I did install ivtv-utils and
that didn't help.

Thanks for any help.

It looks like you're running too old a version of MythTV. Once you move up to
ivtv 1.0.0 you need a recent version of MythTV to use the mpeg decoder.
You'll either have to move to a recent trunk version, or compile 0-20-fixes
after applying the following patch.

http://www.iarmst.demon.co.uk/test/mythfix-ivtv-v3.patch

Once MythTV is updated, you can remove 'options ivtv-fb osd_compat=1' since
it's not required.

The FBIOPAN_DISPLAY error is harmless and can be ignored.

Thanks for your help. I was still unable to get it successfully working.
When I backed out mythtv with a make uninstall - it removed more than what
it should have. Anyway, I decided to go back to getting mythdora running,
and I have had some success with that. I am making a separate posting to
share my steps in getting it running.

Thanks,

Ann

I upgraded to MythTV 0.20.2 (the latest version in the Ubuntu
repositories) so that I can use Schedules Direct. Would this still be
considered too old?

Thanks,
Eric

If it's a pre-built package then it still won't work. You'll have to download
the source & compile it yourself using the patch I mentioned previously.

If you don't want to build it yourself, you'll probably have to move to
mythtv-trunk.
