Oops... Never mind. I see it now. I installed the source for the driver from the Ubuntu package, which did not have the ivtv-driver.c file. Now that I've installed the full kernel source, I see the file and I see the line to change. My mistake.

recompile the driver making the change quoted below. This worked for
that version of the driver. Now that things are
integrated into the kernel, how do I turn off this workaround in the
current version of the driver?

I get popping Stereo, generally mono, but sometimes it will pop and produce
stereo.
