2.0.0?
Fellow Bricoleurs,

So, the beta has been out for about 10 days, and only two bugs have been reported.

http://bricolage.lighthouseapp.com/projects/29601-bricolage/milestones/61923-200

So I'm thinking it's time to get 2.0.0 finally out the door. A number of things need to happen before we're ready to do that:

* Those bugs need to be fixed (plus the one Alex is working on)

* A marketing-focused list of changes needs to be created. It would cover everything in Bric::Changes each of the 1.11 releases, but would be written in plain-ish English so that people can get excited about the changes.

* A press press kit needs to be created. It doesn't have to be long; the PostgreSQL kits make nice examples: http://www.postgresql.org/about/press/presskit84.html. A couple of quotes would be useful, perhaps from Gossamer, The WHO, The Tyee, New Internationalist, or some others.

* A brief announcement needs to be written. It can be similar to what we've created before, but ought to link to the Changes list and the press kit.

* The announcement should also be rejiggered for use on other sites (like FreshMeat) and mail list posts (pgsql-announce, modperl-announce, mysql-announce, php-announce, etc.). We should create a list of lists we want to post to and adapt drafts for each as appropriate.

* The Web site needs updating. Phillip is working on this, and it doesn't *have* to be done for the new version, but it'd be nice if they coincided.

* The source needs to be tested, packaged up, and released.

I have the ability to do any and all of these tasks, but not the tuits. I need your help. If you think you can contribute to this effort, please do! What bits of the above can you do in the next week or so? Please reply to this thread and we'll get a schedule together.

Oh, and if there's anything else you think we should do to help promote this release, reply with that information, too. I want this to be a big release, and to garner some attention, don't you?

Thanks,

David

I will make one more round of bug testing this week. Time permitting, I'll offer my services on the content creation.

That's good news!
My english keeps me off writing marketing material, but i'll offer my time to translate into german and spread a german press kit.
It would also be nice to publish the new website also in german, at least the marketing relevant sections. The domain bricolage.de could be integrated, too.

So I'm looking to fix all open bugs and package this bad boy up for release this week. You had a chance to do this, Matt?

Also, I need some help getting the release ready. Who can take on one or more of these tasks?

Also, Alex, have you figured out the proper fix for the PHP burner on Perl 5.10? And Phillip, can you send me a logo for use in the distribution?

Thanks,

David

Tested and works in 5.10.1 and makes constants available.

Thanks. Does it work with 5.8, too? Also, what should the Changes item for this say?

Best,

David

Hi David,

Yes. There are no entries that are scalar refs, so the first if never
happens.

> Also, what should the Changes item for this say?

Something like:

In Perl 5.10, constants are now stored in the symbol table as scalar
references and not globs.

Cheers,

Alex

Yes, but how did this problem exhibit itself in Burner::PHP?

/me digs into the archives…

Okay, here you go:

That work?

Gah! I fixed the bogus "71" at the top of the file and pushed that, too.

Thanks,

Fellow Bricoleurs,

I've been fixing bugs and Phillip has been creating the new site. Several of you have been testing the new version and reporting bugs. Thank you.

To the rest of you: How are you going to help get 2.0 out the door? We could really use some help with the documentation materials (press kit, changes in plain English, etc.).

Thanks,

David

Hi everybody,

Sorry so be silent on this for so long.

Anyway, I'm happy to write up the changes, if early next week isn't too
late.

Talk to you soon,

Bret

That'd be great Bret, thanks. You don't need to cover any of the bug fixes, but all the new features and improvements listed for 1.11.x should be covered in such a way to get people excited. Do-able?

Thanks,

David

Heck yes. I'm excited about the new features, so the rest of teh
interwebs should be too.

Excellent. The PostgreSQL 8.4 press kit is a good example.

Hi everybody,

I just thought I should check in to apologize for the slow delivery of
the changes write-up. Somehow a holiday week visiting my parents offers
vastly fewer free hours than a typical workweek does.

Still, I've made some good progress and should have something to send
you tomorrow.

Thanks for your patience, and talk to you soon,

Hey Matt,

Where are things with this? I was hoping to release on Monday. Do we need to put it off a few days?

Thanks,

David
